Fighting marine piracy with AI, Machine Vision, and UX Design
Agency 39A collaborated with the Salesforce Foundation to create Mazu, an AI-powered mobile app designed to combat marine piracy by recognizing and tracking pirate vessels. This solution combined machine learning, machine vision, and user-friendly mobile application design to empower ship captains, crew, and global law enforcement agencies.
Challenges:
Our goal in tackling illegal activities at sea required a solution that could identify and track almost any vessel worldwide. This solution needed to be accessible and easy to use for everyone, from global law enforcement agencies to local fishermen.
Solutions:
Our approach harnessed the power of MetaMind AI, Salesforce CRM, Mapbox, and a user experience tailored for diverse personas. By collaborating with Salesforce engineers, Interpol officials, government representatives, and end users, we developed Mazu—an app designed to identify, report, and protect. Mazu is accessible on common devices, extending beyond capabilities of current policing tools. It integrates advanced image recognition and vessel tracking technology into an intuitive user interface, effectively putting a powerful crime-stopping tool into the hands of anyone with a smartphone.
Results:
Mazu garnered acclaim at the United Nations Oceans Council and the Interpol Assembly on Ocean Safety, and was a finalist in the Big Oceans Challenge. The app has made a significant impact in preventing marine piracy, empowering individuals to identify and report suspicious activities at sea, and showcasing Agency39A's innovative capabilities and commitment to ocean safety.
